MATINEE MEETING POPULAR
SOME SPIRITED FINISHES AT AWAPUNI The maliuee meeting sponsored by the Manawata Racing Club attraeted a good crowd at Awapuni yesterday, when eonditions were ideal. Keen interest was taken in the candidates that paraded; especially those claiming engagements at Wanganui and Carterton on fSaturday. fSome of the eveuts provided very spirited fmishes, and the majority of times reeorded were good. The meeting was well condueted throughout and proved liighly successful in every way. Foliowing are the results: — UNRAUED MAIDENSj 5 furs. LACKAMOR (Boreham) 1 Horouta (Wellers) 2 Commereial- (A. G. Waddell) .... 3 Also: Arvukur gelding, Croupier gelding, Lord Quex goiding. .Length and a half; four lengths. Tiiue, L5sec. The winner began smartest and was in the lead throughout from Horouta, who, however, kept liim up to his work over the last bit. TWO-YEAR-OLD RACE; 3 furs. (First Division). Three-quarters of a length; length. Time, 39 3-5sec. Myfox and Metcorina were badly left, Petre Mar jumjiing away smartly and ahvays being in front of the other pair. (Seeond Division). Half a length; two lengths. Time 3s 2-osees. Thimble began well, and galloping like a veteran wou handsomeiy. The winner 's eiTort gained him friends for his eugagement at Carterton un Saturdav. MA1DEX RACE; 3 furs, (First Division). FEN (Aitken) 1 Weh-ome Guest (Clutterbuck) .... 2 Co-operate (Amcyj 3 Also: Glebefield, Cinereous. Half a hend; four lengths. Time,! 1.5 1-dsec. Fen quiekly reaehed the front and won with something in lnuid from Weleome Guest, who was under a liard ride from the toj> of the straiglit. (Hecond Division). Time, 1.4 3-5see. Blank Cheque and Bonifort showed the way into the straiglit, but Kiekie linished strougly over the last bit. HAC-K KACE; 5 furs. (First Division). VOLTATC (Bowness; 1 Duteh Mary (A. G. Waddell) .... 2 Oid Ked (Garth) o Also: Tahli, Oemo. Head; half a length. Time 1.3 3-5 see. Duteh Mary gained an advantage at the sturt and led into the straight from Old Ked, but Voltaie, galloping very attractively, caine on to beat them over the linal stages. Although ho looked abovo himself, Voltaie 's eifort was very attractive. (.Seecmd Division), J'KEFA (Andrews) 1 Tremello (llarris) 2 Prinee Wanaka (Broughton) .... 3 Also: Winning Ticltet, Emerge, Lady Burford, Our Pat. Half a head; thrce-quarters of " a length. Time, 1.4sec. Prefa was in the vau throughout to seorc narrowly from Tremello, with Princo Wanaka tinishing on into third. Winning Tieket was elose up and appeared to be travelling easily. (Third Division). MARY .10 (Aitken) 1 Thunderhoud (Htevens) 2 Tribute (Bowness) 3 Also: Xanook, Havildar, Balcairn. Half a length each way. Time, 1.5 2-psec. Tribute and Balcairn were' the early leaders, but Mary Jo and Thun derhead linished too well for the three-' vear-olds. OPEX RACE; 5 furs. (First Division). DILEAS (Aiuey) 1 Flying Ace (A. G. Waddell) 2 Saludos (Sollars) 3 Also: Specialist, Groek Daueer. Head; neck. Time, l.-lsec,. iSpecialist led to the straight, but gave way to •Flying Ace who just failed to witlistand a lato chalienge from Dilens. >Saludos was travelling easily in third place.
