LAST-MINUTE PRESSURE
PALESTINE ARABS AND LONDON CONFERENCE Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 8. The Kings of Transjordau and Saudi Arabia and the Syriau Government are exerting last-minute pressure on the Palestine Arabs to reeonsider their decision not to attend the London conference, says Reuter's Jerusalem correspondeut. The King Ibn Ha tui sent a message to the Palestine Arab. Higher Comniittee saying that the delegations would be embarrassed by their absenee. Well-informed Arab circles believe that the Palestine Arabs, as a result, might send a delegation of "observers ' '. The Agudath lsrael organisation of orthodox Jews, one of the major Jewish bodies invitcd to the Loiidon talks, rejected its invitation when it was clear that tlie Jewish Agency was not par tieipating. "A more realistic approach to the Palestine conference by the British Government is neeessary if tlie conference is to achieve peaee in Palestine," says the Daily Telegraph 's Jerusalem correspondent. "Tlie failure to invite the Mufti and leading members of the Jewish Agency was justifiable on moral grounds, but not l ho.se* of expediency. Tlie Mufti lias the conlidence of tlie Palestine Arabs, who will not feel bound by anv decision taken by the Arab Htates, whereas they would aecept any policy to which the Mufti agrees. Mr. David Beti Gurion and Kabbi Hhertok similarly are strong liii'ii in Palestine Jewry, and have the iinal word. ' ' The correspondrnt is of ihe opinion that the Arai) Htates are now waiting for the conference to break down so that they can present a case to the United Xations.
