Mr. J. Hewitson, who has been on holiday in Napier, returned to ^ Otaki yesterday. Miss Moncrieff, of Clareville, is at present in Otaki staying with Mrs. W. Burns Smith. Mr. A. V. O'Brien has been appointed handicapper and Mr. L. M. Pine judge for the Otaki Maori Racing Club. The death occurred on Thursday, at' the Palmerston North Hospital. of Mavis Bertha Mary Clarke, only daughter of the late Mrs. C. Shotcer, fomerly of Otaki, and sister of Clarence Clarke. The deceased was 32 years of age. The death occurred at Wellington on Wednesday, at the age of 84 years, of Mrs. Mary Jane Ashdown, wife of the late Mr. Josepli James Ashdown, of Te Horo, and mother of Mrs. T. N. Monk, of Khandallah. The funeral took place at Waikanae to-day. The jubilee celebrations in connection with Bishop Bennett at Rotorua were aUended by a large number of residents from Otaki and district. While in Rotorua several visited Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., who is still in hospital, but they were gratihed to find that he was making steady improvement. Mr. Lowry looked forward to the ncws of the district, and sent his oest wishcs to his numerous friends. Private Henry Meads, writing from Kiwa on August 20, statcs that there everything is up-to-date, with a nice outlook. The meais, he says, are exeellent, while shower and other baths are provided. Among the patients in the hospital are Ron. Fielding, Blondie Blackmore and Jack Wlntcrburn, but all are well on the road to recovery. The latter will be
