WAIRARAPE - SOUTHLAND GAME RULE FORMALITY OMITTED "
By Telegraph—
WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. Wairarapa's representative rugby fifteen will go on to the field at Invercargill to-morrow to play Southland. Wairarapa think they are playing for the Ranfurly Sheld, and Southland think they are defending it. The large crowd which will undoubtedly be present will be convinced that the trophy of (New Zealand rugby superiorlty is at stake, but the sad fact is that the shield is not at stake, and if Wairarapa wins there are likely to b'e far-reaching repercussions. The rules of the shield competition stipulate that the challenging union must inform the New Zealand Rugby Union before the end of August of its intention to chai lenge for the shield. No fault lies with Southland and Wairarapa that they have omitted this formality, but to-morrow's match is not a shield one. Just in case this news brings a smile of jubilation to the faces of the next challengers — North Otago — the fact is that they, too, have omitted to abide by the rules in this respect.
