With a beard that would astonish even "Father Time," a man, who it is alleged has been avoiding military obligations for the last -four years, was taken by surprise cutting firewood at his bush home In far South Westland last week by Detective Sergeant C. H. Davis and Constable AAKeown of Greymouth. Several former attempts have been made by Army Provost officers to find the man, who was known to be in the locality, but on each occasion he has evaded them. During the last four years he has been engaged in deerstalking, whitebaiting, and fishing. His hair is long and wiry, and he declined to have his beard cut off when he arrived at Greymouth. The man was taken to Christchurch to face a military court martial on a deserfcion charge.
