WELUNSTON, Sept. 2. His Excellency the Governor-General announeed tonight that his Maje.st.y has been pleased to approve the following awards to officers of the New Zealand military forces who were attaehed to the United States forces serving in the Paciflc: — Officer of the Most Excellent Order of. the British Empire: Honorary Major E. R. Collins, of Auckland. Military Cross: Ilonoraiy Lieutenant A. W. Roberts, of Timaru. Mentioned in despatches: Honorary Captain R. S. Unwin, of Winchester, South Canterbury; Honorary Lieutenant S. E. Slatter, of Masterton. Major Collins, who is an officer of the Department of Scientific and Tndustrial Research, was on radar duties in the Pac-ific from early 1944. ne left New Zealand in June to enter Birmingham University for a post-graduate study in nuclear physics, under Professor M. L. OJiphant of atomie energy fame, having been awarded a national research scholarship. Lieutenant Roberts, who belonged to the same department, was also engaged in radar work in the Pacific. He was wounded on active service and the citation states: "He showed. courage under fire and a sense of loyalty to his me a." He has resigned from th-e department to undertalce further university studies at Dunedin. Captain Unwin and Lieutenant Slatter were both seconded from the Post and Telegraph Department for radar work in the Pacific. Captain Unwin is 'now chief scientific officer of a Canterbury project, a radar-meteorological investigation being undertaken on the Canterbury Plains by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Lieutenant Slatter has resigned from the Government service to undertake further studies at Canterbury Colle^e.
