MANAWATU'S SUCCESS
DOIMINION BASKETBALL TAURANGA, August 31. By gaining six wins each in the first grade series of the Dominion basketball tournament which concluded this afternoon, Auckland and Manawatu will share the New Zealand Cup for the eoming year. Canterbury were the runners-up, winning the Annie Brown Cup. Matamata won the President 's Shield with six wins in the second grade and Horowhenua and'Hutt Valley tied with five wins each to share the Hayhurst Cup for runners-up. Tauranga won the Kiwi trophy for the third grade, boing the only tearn. tak- i ing part in the tournament to go through unbeaten. Nelson were run-uers-up and will hold the Armstrong Shield. At the conclusio'n of the tournament, teams representing the North and South Islands met in a keen contest, resulting in a win for North Island by 22 goals to 19. Following were the results of the 1 afternoon 's games: — First grade: Manawatu 14, Wanganui 8; Hawke's Bay 22, Southland 13; Otago 15, Canterbury 14; Auckland 34, Wellington 12. Second grade: Matamata 18, Ashburton 14; Southland Minor 9, Horowhenua 5; Taranaki 25, Hutt Yalley 12. Third grade: Tauranga 24, Marlborough 10. Following were the posifions of the teams at the conclusion of the tournament: — First grade: Auckland 6 wins, Manawatu 6, Canterbury 5, Hawke's Bay 3, Otago 3, Southland 2J, Wellington 1R l Wanganui 1. Second grade: Matamata 6, Horo- ] whenua 5, Hutt 5, Southland Minor 4$, j Taranaki 4, Rotorua 4, Ashburton 2, Poverty Bay 1£.
