PLAYING OF MAORIS IN ALL BLACKS
SOUTH AFRICAN CON^ROVERSY CfONTINUES Received Thursday, 11.35 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 28. The possibility of Maoris playing in the New Zealand 1948 team touring Sputh Africa is still the subject of controversy, says Reuter's J ohannesburg correspondent. The Springbok centre, D'r. Louis Barrow, said: "The Sfpringbok 1937 team was quite content to play against the Maoris, and no member of the team refused Maori hospi:ality. The Maori soldiers at Sidi Rezegh saved many young South Africans' lives. Their modesty was impeccable and their manners surpassed the Springbok soldiers. To compare the Maoris with our natives merely reveals a gross lac'k of knowledge." The Rand Daily Mail quoted the views of the president of the North Transvaal Rugby Union, Professor H. B. Davel. "We are already in too much trouble with nonEuropeans from other countries, however good rugby players they may be, to add to our troubles."
