MR. J. THORN, M.P., IN OTAKI
ftMr. J. Thorn, the Labour candi- ■ date for Otaki in the iorthcoming election, was. entertained by mem- j bers and supporters of that party j last Mondav night Mr. Thorn said that he regretted tlie necessity which had compelled Labour to change its candidate, namely the precarious health of the prese'nt member, Mr. L. G. Lowry. Mr. Lowry had been a hard-working and competenc member of Parliament, and his withdra wai from active politics was a great loss to the movement. Mr. Thorn then gave a humorous, but impressive outline of his own political career to date. This revealed that he is a New Zealander, born in Christchurch, and that he is a foundation member of the Labour Party of this country. He j has worked both at manual and literary vocations, and that he has 1 been associated with the politics of 1 London and Glasgow as well as! those of New Zealand. The Government was proud of | its achievements in peace and in war, he said, and he was confiden: that the working people of New , Zealand would give a mandate nexl ! November to continue to legislate for their benefit. A hea rty vote of thanks was . passed to Mr. Thorn at the con- , clusion of his remarks. Replying. lic expressed his desire to address , a public meeting in Otaki shortly.
