Inquiries for Shops A number of inquiries have been ; received in Shannon, if suitable ; prcmises are available, to open up new businesses. Those intending to commence business include a plumber, a ladies' hairdresser and u ladies' dressmaker. Snow-Capper Ranges The Tararua mountains hava been singuiarly free from snow this winter, but last week saw them clothed with a mantle of white. Consequently the air has an added "nip"' in it which, with the continuous heavy showers, )%ave made conditions very unpleasant. Flood Waters Subsiding With the Manawatu River ajmosl back to its usual winter level, much of the flood waters in Buckley and Makerua are subsiding, although there is still sufficient to make farming difficult. Not since the "old man" fiood of 1902 can local residents remember there being so much water lying about. It is reminiscent of the days when boats . were used to negotiate the old Foxton Road to carry the mail between Foxton and Shannon. Stock losses are reported to be heavy, more ' especially among young lambs and , lambing ewes. j Local Industry Thriving A number of locally-manufactur-j ed articles of men's sports clotliing are now on sale at a - Shannon • drapery establishment. The craft- , manship in the articles is excellent and a credit to the girls responsible for their manufacture. When the factory commenced operation in April with fiye girls only a small amount of the work was done in Shannon. During the ■ past four months the staff has been increased to twelve, and, as most of those employed were formerly ' used to an outdoor life, the man- , ner in which they have mastered the art of power machining and settled down to their new environ- : ment is shown in the fine workmanship of the finished articles !
