SPEED ATTEMPT DEFERRED
Received Runday, 7 p.m. LONDON, August 24. The Afeteor speed attempt was deferred after the discoverv of a fuselage fault in Donnldson's planej tlie result of higli speed stress. Tlie other Meteor is also temporarily out of action while designers attempt. to find tlie cause of tho starboard wing dipping at top speed. Tlie vigilance of an engineer saved Donaldson from possible disaster. The fuselage skin of the Afeteor 's belly recent ly showed signs of crinkling of which, according to Donaldson, no one took much notice. An engineer, however, decided last night the investigate more c.arefullv and took off an inspee, tion plate which would be sealed in and painted over and polished to match the rest of the specially prepared skin. Thtdecision meant. four hours' work replaeing the plate but the engineer 's huncli was justified for he found eons.iderable twisting and buekling of the spars atid ribs which, Said Donaldson, meant that in all probability the fuselage would liave broken itp if flown at top speed again. The plane was flowm baek slowly to the Gloster factory.
