Burglars Foiled An attempt was made on Tuesday night to. rob the strongroom of the Wellington East Post Office at Courtney Place, but the burg"lars used too much explosive and jambed the three locks of the strongroom, making it impossible to open the door. Entj-y was gained through a fire escape and window. Nothing was taken from the post office. Pumice Stone Found at Hokitika A large quantity of pumice stone has been found on the sea beach at Hokitika. The stone was washed ashore during. re'cent severe westerly storms, and was covered -ypth barnacles. Most pieces were the size of an egg and worn smooth with the motion of the sea. It is thought that they may have come from some distant volcanic region. Pieces of wreckage were also found, and they appeared to have been in the water for a considerable time. Record Toll Day Tuesday was a record toll day at the Levin Post Office, no less than 417 calls to all parts of New Zealand being handled. The next previous highest was in June, when 409 calls were handled in one day. -These figures represent an extraordinary volume of business for an ordinary day, as will be seen from the fact that over the Christmas and New Year period, when toll traffic is unusually heavy, a day's calls number about 400. Truck Skids Into Drain Two men luckily escaped injury yesterday morning, when the light truck in which they were riding skidded on Tavistock Road and turned over, coming to rest on i'c side in a deep drain. The water in the drain was fairly high after the recent rain, and if the occupants of the truck had not been able to make a rapid exit through the top door, they may have been drowned. The truck was not extensively damaged. Inter-School Sport The Horowhenua College second rugby fifteen suffered a defeat yesterday at the hands of the Hutt Valley High School second fifteen by 19 points to nil. In the first spell Hutt had the advantage of a strong wind and rattled on 13 points; these came from a penalty goal, a field goal and two unconverted tries. In the second half they added another six points with a penalty and an unconverted try. Horowhenua were slightly superior in the forwards, but Hutt won the g'ame on their backs, who were fast ^ and lost no opportunities.
