EXTENSIVE FLOODING

MAIN HIGHWAYS IMPASSABLE The heavy rain on Monday and yesterday has caused extensive floding in the upper Horowhenua and Manawatu areas. The Automobile Association (Wellington) advises that the ShannonPalmerston North highway is covered to a depth of four feet of water at Makerua, and is impassable. The Shannon-Foxton Road is covered with water at Moutoa and motorists cannot use this route, while the Himitangi-Palmerston North Road is blocked with water at Rangiotu. The only route remaining open to Palmerston North from Levin is via Sanson. The Levin-Wanganui road is now clear, and also the Parapara. The Palmerston North-Napier is open, but one-way traffic is neeessary round a slip in the Manawatu Gorge.
