ROADS UNDER WATER

HEAYY RAIN IN LEVIN Rain falling continuously in the last two days in the southern part of the North Island has caused severe flooding in the area north of Palmerston North. The main road between Palmerston North and Napier is blocked by floodwater, and a bridge about six miles from Dannevirke is partially collapsed. There is no detour available on this road at present. Roads between Wanganui and National Park, via Pipiriki and the Parapara, are also closed. Tne main road between Palmerston North and Wanganui is° carrying heavy water about four miles on the Wanganui side of Bulls, and at Wangaehu. One-way traffic is in force in a number of places in. the Manawatu Gorge. Rainfall in Levin in the last 24 hours has been 1.70 in'ches, according to a record taken by Mr. Howard Harvey. This applies up to 8.30 a.m. to-day. Almost two inches have now fallen since 6.30 a.m. yesterday, but with rain fallen before then the total is well over uWO inches.
