PONY RALLY IN LEVIN
HOROWHENUA CLUB'S FIRST OUTING CHILDREN ENTHUSIASTIC On Saturday glast the newlyformed Horowhenua Pony . Clufc held its first rally in Mr. J. Quinn's paddock in Queen Street ZknM. xr. jpite of the dull and threatening Weather, a large number of ciub members and interested spectator;were present. Numerous riding events were held for the children, che most popular from both the spectators and children's point of view being "musical chairs." Various heats of "turning" and "bending" competitions were ruri off. It was explained to the children that it was more important to carry out the exercise in a correct rnanner, rather than to win at any cost. The pony jumping events were very amusing, but it was not long before most of the ponies were a, least negotiating the hurdles. Some of the more experienced ponies and riders jumped the larger hurdles, but more coaching was required for the majority of .the ponies before they could attempt ohem. During the afternoon the president, Mr, G. H. Vickers, addressed the gathering, explaining the aims and objects of the club. He also mentioned that a public meeting would be held soon, in order to adopt rules for the club, etc. Rain which had begun to fall early in the afternoon set in to a steady downpour, with little apparent hope of relief, but the spectators faced up cheerfully to the discomfort, and most of them remained at the meeting until the end. Soft drinks and fruit were distributed, proving very popular, particularly with the children. Hot water was provided for tea making. The final event was a pony trot," in which all the ponies participated. This event, with twelve ponies, made an excellent finale to an enjoyable afternoon. As a means .of i encouraging those children who had' hot ridden before, all' the children, including the very smallest. were given rides on the ponies. . The success of the day was due in no smail measure to the hard work of the various committee members. They deserve the thanks )f the public for the excellence of the show. Special thanks go to Mr. Quinn for the use of his paddock. The club .would welcome new members. The subscription rates are: Juniors, up to 17 years, 2s 6d entrance fee, 2s 6d per year; associate, 17 to 21 years, 5s entrance fee, 5s per year; and senior, 21 years and over, £1 ls per year.
