WELLINGTON, August 16. There was great disappointmeni throughout the niotor transport industry that there was no relief for niotor transport whatever, said Mr. ti. J. Knight, secretary of the New Zealand ftoad Transport Alliance in his comment on tlie Budget. The industry had made repeated representations for relief from liigh taxation on tyrres, veliicles and petrol and was proniised consideration wlien tlie7 Budget was being prepared, but they seem to have been overlooked. Customs dutv, saies tax and war purposes petrol taxes still remained at a high level. Motor transport w*as vital and essential to the whole community. Its importance was second only to production and it had a strong case for relief. bnt tliere _was none. Transport costs must therefore remain high. Booksellers were delighted at the removal of primage duty, said Mr. H. C. South, president of the New Zealand Booksellers' Association and partieularly grateful was Mr. Waltev G. Harrap, English publisher, who put the matter so forcibly to Mr. Nasli at the booksellers' annual conference in^ March. Some time must elapse, said Mr. South, before any adjustment was made in prices.
