satisfactory condition s Private Henry Meads, writing from Japan, states that the trip across was most enjoyable; the weather was excellent and the accommodation good, while the ship and food were of the best. Tinned fruit and salmon, a luxury in New Zealand at the present time, could be procured on board at ls 8d per tin, and for a time tobacco and cigarettes were in good supply, but later were rationed to one hundred cigarettes and a packet of N.Z. tobacco a week.
