LETTER FROM JAPAN
satisfactory condition s Private Henry Meads, writing from Japan, states that the trip across was most enjoyable; the weather was excellent and the accommodation good, while the ship and food were of the best. He had seen many of tne Otaki boys who were on board, and they had also enjoyed the trip. They were quite happy and contented. a stop was made at Suva. Tinned fruit and salmon, a luxury in New Zealand at the present time, could be procured on board at ls 8d per tin, and for a time tobacco and cigarettes were in good supply, but later were rationed to one hundred cigarettes and a packet of N.Z. tobacco a week. Henry, in his usual breezy style, sends his regards to all his friends.
