FOUR SUCCESSIVE WINS

SONERI WELL HANDLED BY BROUGHTON Soneri's win in • the August Handicap was her fourth on end of whieh three were scored at Riccarton. The four-year-old Buland5 shar mare has started only five times this season for four wins and one third. By carrying her 9st 11 lbs t.o victory she proved that. she is probably the best mare in commission to-day. Soneri's first start of the season was at the Levin June meeting. where she ran third to Bay Robe in the Roira Memorial over six furlongs. She won the Members: J Handicap of seven furlongs s.t ' Awapuni in July and txien went to Riccarton, where she recorded. a ' hat trick. She. will not start on che final day of the mgeting, but will return to Otaki this week. Most | of the credit for the successes goes ; to the expert handling of W. J. ! Broughton, who has ridden her in all her successes this season. First In'S Success At Caulfield last Saturday the New Zealand-bred First In record- : cd her second successive win in tne main flat event of the day, the Maiakolf Stakes. Last Saturday 1 week she won the Balalava Stakes, also at Caulfield. Her rider was A. L. Didam, who is training the mare while she is in Australia. Horses placed to her recently were Coin and Macclesfield, who are both capable performers over this distartce. At last this star handicapper of the 1944-45 season has reaehed form. It is reported that she is a greatly improved horse and may aevelop into a good Meloourne or Caulfield Cup prospect. Below Expectations The New Zeaianaer, Oay Fort, favourite for the Australian Sueepiechase, failed to run to expectations last Saturday and ran unplaced. The race was won by Victory March from Quixotic. The winner was at long odds, as he iias not shown any form prior to tnis race. Financial for Caulfield Cup Financiai, winner of the Manawatu and Wairarapa Cups, as well as many other. races, is an acceptor for the Caulfield Cup, and it is probable that he will taxe his piace m the field. Royal Heir Surprises The surprise winner oi the Tikokino Handicap at Hastings last Saturday, Royal Heir, was the rank outsider in a field of thirteen. Royal Heir is a five-year-oid by Hunting Song from Fair Queen, and should piay a prominent pari this season. ,I1: the track had been heavy he may not have paid the price he did, but he outclassed the field and won easily by two lengths. Precedency, a half brother to the brilliant Peter Robinson, had his second start at the Hawke's Bay Hunt meeting last Saturday ' buu ran unpladed.*7' He is a two-year-oid geiding • • by Tiderace from Idolize. Beneve's Solid Win Beneve registerea anotner solid win in the Spreydon Hurdles, aua although his margin was a narrow one, his late finishing run was so great that he outclassed the field over the last furlong. Beneve has had only three starts over hurdles, and has won all three of them through his superier staying power. Majesty's Record It was recently stated by an Auckland sportsman that if Barwon, now Lord Barwon, is considered good enough ro be favourite for the Melbourne Cup, then Majesty has the next Auckland Cup in the bag. Barwon, who has three wins and one unplaced perfonnance out of four starts to his credit, only met Majesty orice, narrowly defeating him into second place. Barwon looked an easy winner a furlong from home, when Majesty eame through with a greai burst of speed to get within a neck of him. Many Northern sportsmen rated Majesty the better of the two, but it may never be proved which is the better horse, unless Majesty takes a trip to Australia. A brown colt by Foxbridge from Molten, Majesty is a three-year-old, and last season was second to Blue Trout as a two-year-old stake winner. v He started only five times for four firsts and one second, and the stake money was £2500. He made his debut in the Gombria Handicap at Ellerslie in November, where he ran Barwon to a neck. He won his next four starts, opening with an easy win in the Nursery Handicap on the first day of th'e Auckland Christmas Carnival. Again on the second day he was not extended to win the Criterion Handicap. With 9st 61b up. he won the Ascot Handicap at the A.R.C. March meeting. Majesty was bought at the National yearling saies in 1945 for 500 gns. by Mr. A. Court. He is trained by F. Smith at Taranaki.
