ABANDONED SHIP WITHOUT INSPECTION
♦ Received Tuesday 7 p.m. NEW YORK, August 12. Captain Artliur Cronin, who abandoned the freighter American Farnier, told a Coastguard Board inijuiry that he gave the abandon ship order iive niinutes after the collision without inspecting the damage belovv the main deek, because he tliought tlie vessel was about to sink. Captain Cronin said he inspected the ship's forward section, also the holds and crew 's and passengers ' quarters. He added that he made no attempt to return to the ship next morning because tlie sea was still rather rough. "I (lid not think it advisable to do so, " he said. The junior third mate, Tulon Brown, who was keeping watch at the time of the collision, said the lookout nian sighted the approaching steamer Riddle which was about. three miles distant, whereupon he changed the American Farnier 's course but (lid not infonn Captain Cronin. Brown declared the Riddle appeared to inake a hani left tuni. Neither ship sounded warning thistles.
