A bit about beer and baccy ! The , British working man (vide latest; statistics) drinks only half as much j oeer as he did forty years ago, but spends four times as much on tobacco! The increased consumption of the weed is world-wide. The | rush and tear of modern life is } doubtless responsible. People's j nerves are keyed up as never be- 1 fore, and good tobacco, . with its I soothing, calming influence. is a| necessity. Here in New Zealand the j demand for it -has expanded ; enormously, especially since the ap- j pearance of "toasted," whieh splen- J did tobacco is out-distancing all its ; competitors in the race for popu- j larity. No need to tell what toasting does! Everybody knows that! it not only enhances flavour and i aroma but, by almost eliminating j the nicotin'e, renders "toasted" ! comparatively safe for even the im- j moderate smoker. The celebrated i brands, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bulls- : liead), Cavendish, Navy Cut No. 31 (Bulldog), Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold, may be said without fear of contradiction to have fairly captured the market.
