Submarine Bomb Did Most Damage DISCLOSURES OF SUMMAR.Y

Received Monday, 11.15 a.m. BIKINI, Aug. 11. Vice-Admiral W. H. Blandy, commander of the task force which carried out the atom bomb tests at Bikini, who is now homeward bound, issued an official summary showing that the underwater charge sank more than four times the tonnage sent down bv the midair charge. Five ships were sunk in each test, but the second bomb's toll included three capital ships and totalled 95,220 tons, compared with 22,620 in the first test. The second test, in addition, damaged four craft heavily, seven moderately and eight lightly. No damage or negligible damage was done to fifty other ships. Most damage from the underwater blast w'as to the hull plating, interiors or fittings. The aerial burst caused widespread topside d £1 IT1 cl R' 6 • Vice-Admiral Blandy added that most of the ships after the second test became untenable for varying periods, due to poisoning. This seemed to call for the development of counter-measures to combat radio-activity "if atomic warfare is actually to pertain."
