Tlie biggest manhunt ever carrii'd out by New youth Wales police is now going 011 in the 1 ■» Uerouse area, Sydney, foi' two nft yho killed a detective and inj 'j! anotlier this al'ternoon. The dead maii was Detective Constable Victor Ahern, aged 40, married with one eliild. Detective Constable Alexander Bowie, aged 27, was injured. Tlie killing took place ih a police car about two miles frorn Long Bay g'aol. The detectives had arrested two nien who were leaving Long Bay gaol after xTisiting some prisoners there. The nien were wanted i'or queStioning about car thei'ts. Al)out two miles i'rom the gaol Bowie, who was driving, heard two shots and 011 turning round saw Ahern slumped in the back seat. lle had been sliot twice th rough the lieart. Bowie stopped the car and grappled with the nien. Jn a fierce figlit inside the car, one oi the men tried a sliot at Bowie but the pistol misfired. Ile then hit Bowie over the head with the pistol and botli nien kicked liini until he was unconseious. Thev then leaped out oi' the car, and rau oi! in different directions. The nien are being hunted by niore than 400 armed police, also soldiers and police dogs. A Police aeroplane flew low over the disIricl this al'ternoon and after dark aruiy searchlights swept the area wliere the fugitives are believed to be liiriing'.
