Salmon Hatchery Closing The Marine Department's salmon hatchery at Hakataraniea will be permanently clased at the end of the present hatching season, and the assets dlsposed of. One Year Ago A mighty- force for the final assault on Japan was being concentrated in the Ryukyu Islands, it was announced from General MacArthur's headquarters a year ago yesterday, August 5. The entire island chain was under the command of the American general. Visiting Australians It was announced at yesterday's meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union that the Australian team, instead of coming in one special plane on August 18, would be brought by four different planes between August 16 and 23. This may make it necessary to cancel the first match against North Auckland on Augdst 21. Inquiries for Dairy Butter City and surburban grocers were becoming embarrassed by customers requesting supplies of dairy butter in lieu of factory butter, sald the Food and Rationing Controller, Mr. A. J. Costelloe,. last night. "It should fte borne in mind," he said, "that little if any dairy butter can be expected to be available in the cities, The suppiy of dairy butter. will be available principally to country distriets." ■ Charges Against Crane Drivers Charges against- 12 crane drivers .employed by the Wellington Harbour Board, alleging that on June 3 they were parties to .a strike, have • been dismissed by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., • in a -jeserved decision. The hearlrig of 'the charges was spread over .:the' F|)eriod from Juiy 5 to 17, the employees pleading not guilty. The charges felated to the working of two coal boats, Wingatui. and Kaimiro, on June 3, the King's Birthday holiday. The Magistrate, in his judgment, said that in his view the Wellington Harboul Board, as informant, had failed to establish that the men were parties to a strike within the meaning of the regulations. Children Great Savers The remarkable effort of New Zealand school children in the war saving campaign has been the subject of a special hoti'ce of thanks from the Minister -of/ Finance, Mr. Walter Nash, td all schools. He states that the movement grew rapidly at the beginning of the war. By December, 1939, there were 764 National Savings groups in theschools, a numbef which grew to 1089 by December, 1945. Schools saved £67,000 in the first year of the war, and in the last year the magnificent figure of £199,000 was subscribed. The Levin Public School raised between £3000.. and £4000 during the war for National Savings. Cloudburst Over Makino A cloudburst over the Makino Valley at about' 5 p.m. last evening was responsible for the Makino Stream staging a record fiood which caused some damage in . parts of the residential and business areas of Feilding. A particularly loud clap of thunder appeared to herald the deluge which descended over the immediate countryside. At . 5.30 the Makino Stream eommenced ' to rise rapidly and close upon 7. o'cloek was running bank level at the approach to the- Manchester? > Street. Bridge. Jn Hobson Street. Here the waters, apparently unabje "t'o; get\through the bridge, backed up and spread over the roadway along Hobson Street and down Manchester Street which becafne, for several chains, almost another river. Several residences in Hobson Street, between Stafford and Marcn Streets, found the floodwaters lapping the fldorboards and the ; household'ers stood by hesitating ■ whether to evaeuate. furniture, etc. Steps were taken to use sacks and any convenient article to make a : stop-gap against the inrush of the water. As the minutes passed the waters rose steadily and soon Mr. P. G. Guy's service station at the ; corner of Hobson Street and Manchester Street was deep in water J and the store on the • opposite corner, occupied by Mr. H. Coe, was surrounded.
