The iirst big postwar swimming event, thc Natiopal Amatcur Atliletie Union's Heniar men's outdoor rueet at San Diogo, drqw a record entry of more than 200 from United States, Hawaii, Mexlco and C'pba. Tlie 1500 metre free stvle was won by tlie 15-year-b-ld- J iminy ' McLane, of Phillips Acac^Cipy, Massacliusetts, in 19 min. 23.1 secs/" . The 200 metre free style was won by Bill Smith, of Hawaii IJniversity, in 2 min. 14.2 see's. 300 metre relay: Dliio Statc, 3 niins. 20.7 secs., an American, record. Jimmy McLane followeij up his earlier success By winning the 400 metre freerstyle in 4 mins. 49.8 secs. Bill Smitli who in 1942 set the American record of 4 mins. 39.6 secs. for tliis distance, was second. • The 20Q.m6l.res breastatroke was won by Jone Vefdeur (Philadelpliia) in 2 mins. 44.3 secs.
