delay in appointing new chief justice WELLINGTON, Aug. 2. Several lawyers in Wellington have individually expressed dissatisfaetion at tlie position which has arisen as a result of the delay in the appointment of a suecessor to Sir Michael Myers, who retired this week. The immediate effect is that the jury list wliich has been called for next week has been cancelled and no sittings on civil eases will be possible until AL011day week when. the first of the available judges will return from his eircuit. The Registrar of the Sopreme Conrt said tliat all cases set down for next week will be moved probably three weeks back. With the absence in Japan of Mr. Justice Northcroft and tlie oceupation of Mr. Justice Smith on tlie report of the Eoyal Commission on lieensing, the beneh is short of three judges sinee Sir Michael Myer's retirement. A lawyer of many years practice m Wellington said this was the first time he could recall a complete lack of judges in the capital although, other centres had been in that position occasionally.
