JUNIOR CHAMBER MEETS
PLEASANT TEA FUNCTION 4 l^rgp npmb.er pf the members of the Levin ' Junior Chamber of Commerce met in the Oxford Tearooms last ev.erfing fbr a bpffet tea. These teas will become a nionthly. .feature, of the chamber 's activities. The presiden't (Mr. D. * J." Sweetzer) anp the secretary (Mr. G. H. Sorenson) were present. The gathering was entirely informal, and talks were given by Messrs. Frank Croot and H. Thorley. Mr. Croot spoke of the leather industry in New Zealand, describing the various processes apd types of leather that were used in different branches of the industry. Asked why' ' his ' firm h'ad come to Levin, Mr. Croot said tha't the move had been made from Lower Hutt to Levin b'ecaiise p.f a lab.our shortage in the Hutt. The firm was training local mpn and when more supplies became available, more men would be'taken on. Mr. Thorley gaye a short and concise talk on the manufacture of ice crcam." flq emphasised the fact that the ice" cream' industry was, in a sense, a primary indu,stry^ as it depended directly on the farmer for suppl'ies of cream. "ft is quite true," said Mr. Thorley, "that ice cream is made of cream." He also described some of the processes in the manufacture and precautions taken to ensure that the ice cream was entirely germ-free thraughout its production and sale. * Before the meeting dispersed, Mr. Sorenson proposed votes of thanks to the speakers, which were carried by acclamdtion.
