NOTABLE SERVICE OF LATE ELLEN MELVILLE
The late Miss Melville, of Auckland, was tke lirst woman city councillor in New Zealand and tke second woman to enter the legal profession in the Dominion. Her record of public service was in many respects uiiique. She was the senior member of the Auckland 'City Council, on which she. had sat continuously for 33 years, while her record as a barrister and solicitor practising on her own aceount since 1909 is believed to be unequalled by anv other woman member of the legal profession in the British Empire, says the Star. Miss Melville 's entliusiasni for the eause of women led her to take an active part in many organisations, and i she became widely lcnown as a public spoaker.
