The Ooptic, when four days uut from Curacao, received an S()S froin the American tanker Scot- : tish American, asking for the serviees of a doctor. The Coptic "immediately i changed course and 91 hours later, at l niidnight on July 16, came uji witli the i tanker. The patient, Mr. P. Nonnan, of Xortli Shields, was immediatelv transferred from the Scottish American and ihe Oojitic's surgeon, Dr. B. 1*1. P. ALcOullouch, a New Zealander, operated i'our hours later 011 the ship's dining table. Although the nian's appcndix had bnrst some hours previously. the operation was successful and when the Oojitic had rcached Tilbury on July 2cS Nonnan, was well on liis way to recovery.
