MR. GEORGE MERCER Shannon suffered the loss of one ! ,.f its oldest and most highly : espected citizens when Mr. George /Iercer passed away at the Pal- ; .nerston North Hospital on Satur- ' iay, fdllowing many montlis of ill aeaith. The lale Mr. Mercer was born in 5 Nelson 63 years ago, and was the; :son of Mr. John Mercer and the, |late Mrs. Mercer, of that town. I ! Some 33 years ago Mr. Mercer, { Itogether with his wife and young Ison, came to reside in Shannon,! i .vhere Mr. Mercer was connected ji vith the flax industry for many 1 ' years. The deceased gentleman j vas of a quiet, good natured dis- ! position, and although he did not | ; ,ake an active part in local body i ' affairs, he was a silent worker for ; .he betterment of the town and ' sports bodies of Shannon. The late : Mr. Mercer is survlved by his vidow. Their only son, Douglas, ! ( paicl the supreme sacrifice in the . jeccnd World War. j The funeral was held yesterday i ifternoon from the Anglican : 1 Church, the services being con- j ; ducted by Rev. J. H. Datson. The ! • pallbearers were Messrs. E. W. 1 . Mercer, A. F. Mercer, A. H. Ihle, B. ! H. Torstonson, G. Hampson and N. j i Gallichan.
