Damaged by 1945 Snowstorm An estimate of the cost at £100,000 of effecting temporary repairs to the Post and Telegraph Department's plant as a result of damage by the snowstorm in Canfcerbury a year ago is made in the annual report to Parliament of the department. Prime Ministers' Conference The Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) who recently attended a conference of Dominion Prime Ministers in London, has handed his report on that conference to the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and it will be discussed in the Honse of Representatives when Mr. Fraser presents his report on matters to come before the Peace Conlerence in Paris. Ghost Town Because of the action of thieves, the Inangahua Hospital Board has decided to move to Reefton the remainder of the contents of the Merrijigs Hotel immediately for storage there. The hotel and its contents were bequeathed to the hospital board by Mr. Albert Wright. The property is in the ghost mining township of Merrijigs, wlrere there is no other habitation. Taxi "Police" The need for some organisation to "police" the taxi business and report lapses to the Metropolitan Licensing Authority which had the power to revoke a license, was stressed by the Transport Licensing Appeal Authority, Sir Francis Frazer, in Wellington. He said it was not for him to say what the organifeation should be but it should be one with discipline behind it. When a man was given a taxi license he was^ granted a privilege and he should give service. Women in Public Service A meeting of women public servants will be held at Wellington to-day to discuss anomalies which have arisen with the implementation of the new pub'lic service salary scale. Cyclist Injured While cyclmg along the Foxton - Palmerston North highway, about two mile§ from the Tiakitahuna railway station at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, Miss Kathleen Bevan, oi Wanganui, was involved in a collision with a motor car driven by Mr. D. M. Mclntyre, manager of the Bainesse Dairy Factory. Miss Bevan received a broken left leg and was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital for medical treatment. Both the cyclist ' and the motor * car were travelling towards Palmerston North at the time of the accident. Mr. Mclntyre said that he was blinded by the dazzling lights of an approaching car and fid not see the cyclist until he was almost upon her. National Savings The weekly figures for deposits to National Savings in the Palmerston North district showed an improvement on the previous week's totals. The city recorded £1630 18s 5d. Of the country places, Dannevirke made a splendid effoi't by' returning £2682. This enabled that town to achieve the annual quota, as did Pongaroa, making seven places in the district which have now achieVed this distinction. Other toWns to do well were Levin £942, Apiti £507, Shannon £412, Feilding £382, Pongaroa £332, Pahiatua £267 and Woodville £258. Twenty-one offices obtained their weekly quota, cofisistihg of Apiti, Ashhurst, Bulls, Dannevirke, Feilding, Glen Oroua, Halcombe, Kimbolton, Levin, Manakau, Palmerston North, Ohau, Pahiatua, Pongoroa, Rangiwahia, Rongotea, Sanson, Shannon, Weber, Weraroa and Woodville.
