HANDICAPPED BY TOO MANY SMALL JOBS
WELLINGTON, July 26. In the Ilouse today the following question was asked by Mr. M. H. Oram, M.P.: — "Will the Minister state what steps are being taken to irnprove the conditions in the Police Force, and in particuJar will the Minister give instructious that detectives and police oflicers be relieved from the duty ot enquiring into minor ofTences such as breaches of the rationing and price regulations so as to enable them to devotc thoir full time to the' apprehensiou of olfenders and the prevention of crime. ' ' Iu a note to the qnestion, Mr. Oram said there would appear to be a considerable increase in the number of burglaries, house breakings and similar offenees, while in the larger centres or population, detectives are frequentJy kept waiting about the Court to give formal evidence regarding enquiries I made by them in comparatively triviai I cases.
