Received. Thursday, 9.15 p.m. BTKINI, July 25. Vice-Admiral Blandy, reporting from the Mount McKinley nine miles from the centre of the target, has announced that the explosion sank the Arkansas, a concrete oil barge and a tank-landing craft. He added that the Saratoga was listing and down by the stern. The Japanese Nagato had a very slight list. it was impossible to determine if some of the other vessels were sunk or not. Vice-Admiral Blandy said he had not ascertained the fate of all the submarines which had been submerged foi the blast. .None came to the surface. Two were sighted from the air in their proper submerged positions. The exact efiiciency of this bomb was not yet known but it appeared normai in every respect. There had been no mjuries and no loss of life. Elaborate safety precautions were continuing and the task force would not be able to enter the lagoon as soon as after the first test. Bikini was not inundated but a wave seven to ten feet high rolled up the beach and a small island nearby was swamped.
