SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightiy meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. R. E.'Downes) and Crs. R. R. Lind, W. Clayton. J. ! A. Roach, D. Higgie, J. Curran and C. Wishart. An apology for absence ■was received from Cr. Aitchison. ; who, owing to illness, is confined to his bed. The couneiiiors jomed with the Mayor in wishing Cr. Aitchison a speedy recovery, and aiso congratulaiing him on his rcceat : appointment to the board of dn'cotors of the Shannon Dairy Company. A communication was received from Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., acknowledging receipt of the council's letter addressed to Mr. L. G. Low--y, M.P., in connection with the call- , ing of tenders for further State house units at Shannon. Mr. Thorn advised that he had been asked by Mr. Lowry, who, owing io illness, was unable to attend to the matter, to make representations in the matter on the council's behalf to the Minister of Works. Mr. Semple advised that within a | mon th tenders would be calict! icv-l the erection of a further four State j house units at Shannon. It v.a.- ! agreed by the council that Mr.) Thorn should be written to, cxpressing the council's apprecia- ! tion for the interest and assistaiice j lic had given the matter. Permission to hold a street stall at Shannon on August 9 was sought by the Shannon Badminton Club. The club pointed out that it ■ was providing sport at a cheap rate , to the younger people oi the town, and as the result of the hig'-i vst ' "of equipment the club's finances were running low and further l'unds were needed to carry on unr.'i the end of the season. Oti tlio motion of Cr. Lind permission was ' granted. A letter was received from :Father M. N. Foley, bringing before the council notice of the need for , a suitable parking space in irot.t; of the Catholic Church. In .area the road is very narrow and parking is very difficult in bad weather. Consequently, people have io park their cars on the side of the road, which malces it difficult for other cars using the road. Aftcr discussion the matter was left in the hands of the works , committee, with power to act. | Advice was received that the lower end of Stansell's Drain had been cleaned up to the borough .boundary, . ancl.. advised, that, ...the contractors were prepared to carry on and clean the council's section. It was decided that ten chains of drain should be cleaned at the price of five shillings per chain. Cr. Clayton, chairman of the library committee, reported on the condition of the library, and it was decided to purchase a further 100 books. Application was made for a load of metal by a resident in Grey Street. The request was granted. Permission was granted to place a tile drain under the footpath at a residence in upper Plimmer Terrace. It was decided that necessary work at the foreman's house should be carried out. j Cr. Wishart reported that the Fire Brigade now had fourteen members, seven of whom were without uniforms. He said that the brigade was holding a ball during, August, when it was hoped to raise1 some funds towards the cost of providing these uniforms. New uniforms would cost the brigade between £50 and £60. Accounts amounting to £59 6s Id were passed for payment.
