OPENING OF CONFERENCE

WELLINGTON, July 24. The silver jubilee conference of the Dominion Federatlon of Women's Institutes was opened this morning" by Lady Freyberg. More than 1000 delegates are_ attending". The Prime Minister (Mr. Eraser) and the Mayor (Mr. Will Appleton) Wefe presfent, and also Miss A. E. J. Spencer, of Hawke's Bay, who founded the Women's Institute movement 25 years ago. Her Excellency rbf'eiTed to the institute as "a fine piece of organisation, Well carried out," and said it had done much to devel'op and enrich the lives of countrywomen. It had a three-fold object in homemaking, co-operation and citizfenship, and Her Excellency stressed that now the war and war work had finished. the first of the three shoilld b'e made the first aim of all. The best hope for the future lay in happy horftes-. Miss Spencer spoke of the fellowship of country women throughout the world. Natidnal boundaries, she sfii'd, mVist not be stressed too much, but rather the hearths and homes of the countrysides of the world.
