OBITUARY
MR. HARI WI KATENE The death of Mr. Hari Wi | Katene, a well-known Native Land, Court official took place at hisj home at Johnsonville on Saturday ; night. ^ i Mr. Katene, who was 59, was thej eldest son of the late Wi Katene,: of Motueka, : where he was born. He was educated at the high school there; also at Te Aute College. For about 30 years he was associated with the Native DepartmenL serving with various Judges as clerk of the Native Land Court. He was a: first-grade licensed interpreter. In) 1929 and again in 1932 he unsuc-i cessfully . contested the Southern Maori seat. In his younger days Mr. Katene was a prominent Rugby footballer, representing the Golden Bay-Nel-son district,, and later the Taranaki. Maoris. He took an active part in hockey administration, ' and founded the Ngati-Raukawa Maori. Hockey Federation. For many » years he had been a steward of the Otaki Maori Racing Club. Mr.! Katene was ... recognised on the ! marae as an orator, and was a familiar figure as a leader at Maori gatherings of importance. ;
