GOODBYE TO ACHILLES
«. AUCKLAND, Julv 17. Tn sjiitc of an overcast sky and threatening weather, about 2000 Auclc lamlers: travelled to Devonport navaf base this afternoon to farewell the Achilles, the Royal New Zealand Navy's most famous cruiser, which is returning* to England for reversion to the Royal Navy. The Achilles sailed proiiiptjy at 4 p.m. with her long paying off pennant streaining well over the stern. A number of relatives of men in the crew and friends gathered outside the dockyanl gates carly in t]ie afternoon and as soon as the gates were opened to tlie ]mblie, there was a rush to gain vantage points on Cafliope Wltarf. Tlie crew were allowed leave in tlie morning aiul in tlie af'te.rnooii thev were permiltod to leave the sliip and iningle with friends until williin 15 liiinutes of sailing.
