TEMPERANCE UNION

The July meeting of the Levin branch of the W.C.T.U. was held recently in the Salvation Army Hall. The president (Mrs. A. C. Kennerley) occupied the chair and extended a welcome to a number of visitors. In response to an appeal, it was decided to assist with the shop day on August 20 for the proposed children's play centre. A letter was read asking for assistance with gift parcels to be sent to W.C.T.U. members in England. It was agreed that members bring tinned foods suitable for inclusion in these parcels to the next meeting. Facts read from the Vanguard showed that in 1945 the liquor expenditure in New Zealand aihounted -to £13,480,850, while in 1944 no less than 2,365,437 lbs of sugar were used in the production of beer. In the same year, 943,897 bushels of barley were imported into New Zealand. The shining words of Mr. Bevin, British Foreign Minister, at the Assembly of the United Nations, when he urged the strictest possible economy~ in the -use of all grainin - an endeavour to relieve the famine conditions in the distressed countries, were a direct challenge to all to avoid waste, particularly of grain. Readings appropriate to memorial day were contributed by Mrs. Kennerley. The competition, jumbled names oi past temperance workers, was won by Mrs. Andricksen. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Henskie and Rose. Prayer and the Benediction closed the meeting.
