Personal Mr. James Thorn, M.P. for Thames, has been selected as the official Labour candidate for the Otaki seat at the general election. The present Labour member for Otaki, Mr. L. G. Lowry, is retiring. Canon Fry, who is the Bishop's Chaplain during the Synod, will be in Wellington throughout the week attending the annual Diocesan Synod. The Rev. Paora Temuera will also be in Wellington through the week attending the Synod. The sudden death oceurred on Saturday, at Paekakariki, of Mr. James Duncan Oldridge. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mesdames H. A. Corrigan and J. B. Webb. The deceased was 75 years of age. Staying with Mr. Bert Staveley, Rangiuru Beach, during last week were Mr. and Mrs. L. Free, Kelburn, Wellington, Mr. Peter Curtis, Christchurch, Mr. and Mrs. A. Taylor, Wellington (the latter of South Africa), and at the weekend Mr. N. Keily, Gisborne, Mr. C. Reid, Wanganui, Miss Pat Hannah, Palmerston North, and Mr. B. Reid, Wellington.
Strange Fish A peculiar fish, rich in colour and measuring nearly a foot long, has been found on the Otaki Beach by Mr. R. Payne. In form it resembles the sea-horse. Rifle Trophies Presented On Saturday liight the Wellington Rifle Association held an end-of-season smoke concert in the Empire Hall. The deputy-presi-dent, Mr. A. Ross, presided, and the cfficial guests were Lieut.Colonel G. P. O'Leary and Major T. Cronin. Mr. Ross, in his remarks, stressed that if the Trentham range was to be taken over for housing, as seemed imminent, the association should have enough vision to find suitable ground for another range, up t.o the Trentham standard. Trophies were presented as follows : Osmond Shield (tearn shooting), Hautere Defence Rifle Club. Union Shield (inter-club shooting, senior grade) , Karori Defence Rifle Club. Of the 25 occasions on which this shield has been competed for, the Karori Club has won it 15 times. Union Shield (junior), Petone Defence Rifle Club. Petone Defence Rifle Club championship shield, R. ; H. Nicoll. University Defence Rifle Club musketry trophy, S. T. Scooner. A new .303 rifle was presented to the retiring secretary, Mr. H. M. Sansum, in appreciation of his work.
