SERIOUS AUSTERITY INCREASES AVOIDED
LOAN CAUSES SATISFACTION Reeeived Tuesday, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, July 15. Cheers mingled with "Noes" greeted a statement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Dr. Hugh Dalton, in the House of Commons that "the House share the Government's satisfaction that Congress has approved the loan." He added
that 11' the loan had not been passed, Britain would have faced a serious increase in austerity, but novv, although she still had to do without many imports which she would be glad to have, the Government could confinn the plans alreudy made for much-needed supplies from abroad. Dr. Dalton said the Government would be able to authorise the purcliase of foodstuffs, which, if (jbtainable, would provide a more varied diet for Britain. Britain would also be able to carry out her intention for more plentiful supplies of raw materials and a limited increase in manufactured goods, and, it was hoped, newsprint. The Minister of Fuel (Mr. E. Shinwelli would be able Lo make a statement 011 pelrol within a few days. Dr. Dalton said that Britain could not relux her efforts, especially i'or exports. The loan enabled the Government to provide good standards of Jiving everywhere.
