GENERAL MEETING HELD A general meeting of the Shannon branch of the Returned Services Association was hpld in the Druids' Hall on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Ritchie presided and those present were Messrs. S. W. Barber, P. V. Tucker, C. Guerin, F. Thurstcn, H. Cook. J. R. Campbell, C. A. Elvines. T. S. Downes, J. J. Moynihan, E. Morris, E. Veale, J. Jones, N. R. Sell, J. H. Sinclair, R. Quinlan, E. P. Gunning, W. J. Jennings, J. L. Elvines and W. Third. Apologies were received from Messrs. R. M. Lange, V. J. Bateman and R. Plook. The following new members were welcomed Messrs. C. H. Curruthers (Merchant Navy) and S. H. Gunning and E. H. Hermansson. ' Mr. E. A. Oisen was transferred out. Mr. W. N. Brown was transferred to the South African War Veterans' Association. The secretary (Mr. E. P. Gunning) advised tliat the roll now stood at Shannon 176 and Tokomaru 43, a total of 219 members.
A ietter was received from the Foxton R.S.A. tendering an apology for not being able to attend the address by Mr. H. B. Burdekin. district vice-president of the N.Z.R.S.A. Correspondence was also received from the War Assets and Realisation Board in reply to the branch's enquiry as to the possibility of purchasing the mess hall at the Whitanui Detention Camp for a club room in Shannon. Tne 'board advised tliat the Lands and Survey Department required all the buildings from the camp to provide accommodation on soldier settlements. A motion was carried endorsing : >,he action of the dance committee j in authorising the tuning of the Women's Institute piano and granting the institute a donation. Mr. S. W. Barber outlined a suggestion from the executive com-
mittee whereby funds could be obtained for the possible erection of a club room in Shannon.' It was decided to send a circular letter to each member- outlining the scheme and obtaining their opinion. The secretary stressed the fact that considering every member liad been notihed of Mr. Burdekin's address, an attendance pf 11.36 per cent. of the members was not satisfactory. After the meeting members were entertained at • supper by the women's section.
