OTAKI COUNCIL'S MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, presiding. There were also present Crs. Young, Gimblett, Hakaraia, Bartosh, Bennett and Cookr Street Lighting The Horowhenua Power Board wrote advising that at its last. meeting consideration was given to the street lighting charges, and it had been agreed to reduce the present charge of £3 17s 6d, less 20 per cent. for the dusk to dawn services to £3 nett as from April 1. A further concession of ls per lamp per quarter was to be made during the periods when rationing was necessary. — Received. A further letter from the board notified of an increase in commission from 2 per cent. to 24 per cent., as from April 1 on accounts collected on the board's behalf. — Received. Cr. Bartosh pointed out the need for a light at the corner of Dunstan Street. It was. considered that the request was fair and reasonabie, but that the shortage of power had to be considered. It was said that the matter was to receive consideration. Sub-tlivisions Dealt With Mr. C. W. Foster forwarded foi the approval of the council a piun of a proposed sub-division of Loi 1, d.p. 8406. The scheme involve'-. cutting off a quarter acre section from an area owned by Mr. O. J. D'Ath, leaving a frontage of 373 : links. The south side of Rangiuru Road at that place was exempteci : from widening by Order-in-Coun- 1 cil. — Granted. A letter was received from Mr. C. ; W. Foster, who stated that there i was no surplus sand on the sub- ; division of part of the camp sitc ; that could be taken away in con- j nection with the proposed scheme ; and filling hollows on seciions one ! to seven to give flat bmlding sec- i tions level with the road. Some of Ihe sections were covcred with vegetation and some hrd sufficient flat ground, level with the road, for a house site. — Plan to be given effect to. Messrs. Harper, Atmore and Thomson wrote 011 behalf of Mr. Maberley requesting approval to a sub-division of his land fronting Waerenga Road, as he desired to sell a portion of it. — Granted conditi'onally. Miscellaneo«s Matters The provision of a fire plug on the Otaki Domain for the use of the fire brigade was reported on by Cr. Bartosh, and the matter was left to the domain committee to further report thereon. It was decided that the rates be struck in accordance with the notice given. Mr. B. H. Rhodes wrote making a claim for damage done at hroffiee when the Norfolk pine in the council's grounds was cut down, — j Matter to have attention. The Palmerston North Hospit?) I Board forwarded a copy of a letter i which haa been issued from the Waikato Hospital Board dealing j with the board's estimates for the | ■year 1946-47. At the monthly meet-

The Meteorological Departmen' wrote asking for records of th ; rainfall in Otaki. — Decided to repi that no official records were kept. A letter was read relative to th matters of horses led on the mair highways and there was a difference of opinion between councillors r to the correct side of the road o which to lead a horse. Som thought that the right side woub be correct, but it was generalh favoured that the left-hand side ■ would be better when meetin: trafflc. — It was decided to give th* matter further consideration. The Agricultural Departmen' wrote asking for a clearance ir respect of the Otaki Domain, usec by it during the war period, ano pointing out that the ground hat been restored to order and post? etc., for fencing provided. — Received. Mr H. B. Edhouse wrote asking I permisslon to erect a cycle-stand in front of his shop. — It was considered by some councillors tha" the street was too narrow for sucl a purpose, and it was agreed. tha' the matter be referred to the traffic inspector. It was pointed out that notic had been served on those concern ed relative to the cleaning o' Mangapouri Creek, and that whih some had given the matfer atten tion others had not done so. It wa decided that action be take: against those who had not don the necessary work. Cr. Bartosh pointed out thr damage was being done to th council's property in the vicinity ■ the water- works, a firm makiruse of the road. — It was resolveto contact the firm of MessiOdlin, Ltd., on the matter, thehaving decided to secure timber a: the rear of fhe council's property. / R.S.A., asked permisslon for the names of fallen soldiers to be placed on the obelisk in the rest ground. — Agreed to. Cr. Bartosh drew attention to the fact that repairs were needed to the grandstand on the Otaki Domain, and it was agreed that the "matter be given attention. Works' Committee Report The "works '"committee recomrnended that Anscombe and Asso-; ciates be asked for an approximate, price for preparing a lay-out of the Tasman Beach motor camp, that: the children's centennial ground be let to Young Fun for a term of one : year from July 17, 1946, on the' same conditions as previously and that Mr. Channings, of Levin, be asked to submit a price for laying down two basketball courts on the reserve at the back of the State : houses in Riverbank Road.— Adopted. l
