PIONEER SETTLER PASSES
THE LATE MRS. CHARLKS NEES Another of the rapidly-diminish-ing imks with the eariiest days of jhe Horo whenua district was severed on Monday by the passing of Mrs. Charles, Nees, of Manakau, who had resided there throughouf ner lifetime of 77 years, and who was one of the district's pioneers in the fullest sense of the word. The lare Mrs. Nees was born at Manakau in 1869 and was the ejdest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs, Thomas Bevan, a name which is inseparably wpyen into the district's history. She was married at Wellington 54 years ago to Mr. Nees, Throughout her life Mrs. Nees took an avid interest in the oommunjty life of the t'ownship, out it was horticulture which had her more defmite preference. She was a great fiower lover and exhibited with considerable success ac shows throughout the • district. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. G. S, Scott, of Manakau, and two sons, Messrs. Reg. and "Sonny" Nees', of .the Hutt i Valley.
The funeral took place yesteraay, : when there was a very large attendance from all parts of the district The services at the church and graveside were conducted by , the .tev. G. B. Stote-Blandy, in place of Canon Fry, who was indisposed. xhe pall-oearers at the church were Messrs Lionel Bevan, F. Fanning, W. G. Pope, W. BuU, ' E. W. Ciark and W. G. Phillips. At the graveside they were Messrs. jjieweiiyn Bevan, N. Bevan, K. Bevan, R. Bevan, H. Bradford and Reg. Ford. lviany and beautiful were the fioral tributes received, bearing eioquent testimony to the esteem m wdich the late Mrs. Nees was held".
