FOOTPATHS NEED ATTENTION
COUNCIL TO OBTAIN ESTIMATE The condition of the footpaths in Shannon was the subject of a discussion at the fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council. The matter was raised by Cr. Clayton when he drew the council's attention to a letter published in the Shannon page of "The Chronicle" recently and pointed out that the correspondent was justified in making the criticism. "The footpaths and roads within the borough are in a bad state," said Cr. Clayton, "and something should be done." Cr. Roach stated that many of the footpaths were not in use, and had consequently grown over. Cr. Clayton said that many of the sealed footpaths were full of holes, and in wet weather water was sometimes inches deep. The Mayor asked if it was suggested that all the sealed footpaths in the borough should be topdressed, and suggested that the chairman of the works committee eould perhaps bring forward an estimate of the work. It was pointed out that the council should try and hold all existing footpaths. It was agreed by the couuncillors that mowing of the high grass would only remove the trouble for a short while. The footpath in Grey Street was mentioned as an example; that footpath had quite a lot of use and was recently put in order and now it is starting to break up again. "The Mayor stated that the only satisfactory method was to lay all footpaths in concrete, but this was out of the question at the moment. Cr. Clayton mentioned that recently holes in the roads had been patched up, and he thought that something should be done to the more important footpaths. Cr. Wishart, in reply to a question, stated that the footpath in Venn Street was in very bad order, and water lay there for two or three days after heavy rain. The borough foreman was instructed to inspect this area as. the Venn Street footpath is used quite a lot. The chairman of the works committee (Cr. Lind) said that last year funds were not avaiiable to carry out extensive repairs to the roads and footpaths, but it was hoped that more work would be carried out in this direction this year. In reply to an interjection concerning the Vance Street footpath, councillors agreed that this was unreasonable, as the only solution to this problem was a concrete footpath and there was already one in this street.* It was agreed that the chairman of the works committee should bring forward an estimate for the patching out of all existing footpaths.
