LONDON, July 5. i The American, Sam Snead, won the i British Opeu Golf Ohampionship with j a total of 290. A strong wind todav j for the third and fourth rounds m? le ( golf difficult, and scores were eonsider- ! ably higher than for the iirst two rounds. Snead started the fmal round unimpressively, talcing a six at the fifth-and reaching the turn in 40. But He was given plenty of scope by his rivals' gradual downfall, and ended the round steadily. Snead, Bulla and Rees were leading with 215 at the end of the third round, both Bulla and Rees erashing in the (inal round, taking 79 and S0 respectivelv. Loeke ruined his remaining chances by taking ilve lives in the last six holes. The leader at the end of 36 holes, Henry Ootton, did not produce his earlier form and Iinished with a final . ronnd of 79. Scores in the last two rounds, and the total, were: Snead, 71, 70, 74, 75, 290; Bulla, 71, 72, 72, 79, 294; Locke, ' 69, 74, 75, 76, 294; von Nida, 70, 76. 74, 75, 295; Rees, 71, 70, 73, S0, 295; Cotton, 70, 70, 76, 79, 295; Ward, 73, 73, 73, 76, 295; K.
