REAPPRAISAL OF FIRST TEST
BIIvINI, July 5. In a reappraisal of the dropping of the atomic bomli, Viee-Admiral Blandy fermed it "a miss of appreciabie dimensions, " because of wind and other uncontrollable factors. He said that as great refinements in the calculation were made, the airhorne atoni bomb wonld be shown to be ! stronger than was at Hrst estimatecl. The Bikini test was a suceess because the target fleet was arraved to take care of the possibility of a miss. A. radiological. . specialist, Captain Shields Warnen, reports that 10 per eent. of the ,1600 animals on the target fleet died from atomic blast, radiation or drowning. Laboratory examinations were only beginning, but as far as he could tell sorae died as the result of radiation. Referring to the delaved effects of radiation, he said that a considerable number of deaths were expected later. Rome of the animals would be returned i to America to determine whether ex posure to radiation atfected ofl'spritig. Othefs would be killed for atiiopsy. Rome wonld be treated, and others left untreated for comparison.
