INCREASED ROAD FATALITIES
v — IIAZARDS OF DARKNESS Road deaths during the first half of 1946 numbered reporua uic Transport Department. Tnis represents a consideraole increas.e upon the firstsix months of 1945, when 58 deaths were recorded. The nurnber of deaths approaches the iy41 figure of 107 killed from January to June inclusive. Prior to the \var the ngures had reached over 140 deaths during the first half of the year. Of the 98 fatalities this year, 41 were occupants of motor-vehicles, 28 were peaeStrians, 16 others were liders of motor-cycles or pillon riders and 13 were riders " oi bicycles. The 58 casualties during the first six months of 1945 were classified: Occupants of motorvehicies 27, pedestrians 19, motorcyclists (or pillion-riders) seven and cyclists five, During June 1946 there were 18 road deaths. Ten of those killed were occupants of motor-vehicles 'and one was a motor-cycie rider. |Five pedestrians were killed and | one cyclist. The increased hazards of the road at night time were ■ again illustrated by the fact that jmost of the accidents happened I during hours of darkness.
