BICYCLE A MINUTE
Received Thursday, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, July 4. An Australian firm which plans to erect a factory capable of producing one bicycle per minute, is seeking a site near Sydney. The position will be selected by Mr. E. A. Weston, former director of technical manpower to the British Ministry of Lahour, who has arrived in Australia to organise the new system of rapid production of bicycles. He said the new factory would produce over 200,000 machines yearly by 1947. The price of a good bicycle would be reduced from £12 10s to £10. A machine which cost £4 before the war now cost £9 in England. The world shortage of "bicycles had reached at least 40,000,000 and Australia was in a position to compete with England to supply this shortage. The present production of cycles in Australia was 50,000 yearly and 75,000 others were assembled from parts. At least 20 countries were asking for Australian-made cycles.
