RANFURLY JACOB'S RECORD Included in the New Zealanc Universities Rugby representative to play Wellington at Athletic Park Wellington, on Saturday, is Ran furly Jacob, who only last year wa captain of the Horowhenua Colleg first fifteen. He played for the ■ Horowhenua College first. fifteen in 1 1941, his first year- at- the eollege and in 1943 became captain of tln team. He is at present attending Victoria University College, where he is studying veterinary science under the James Smellie Memoria Bursary. During the 1945 season he was chosen to play for both the Horowhenua senior and colts repre- , sentative teams, and since attenci- ; ing university his play has been of such an outstanding nacure that he was seiected to play half-bac.k for; North Island Universities against ' South Island Universities. On the day "Ran" played a steady game with sound defensive and attacking play, and was instrumental more than once in starting his j backs on a scoring movement. As a i result of this and other exliibitions ! he was seiected for the New Zea- 1 land team, which, it is hoped, will beat the Kiwis. To play against such a combination will be an hon- ' our of which "Ran" and this district can be justifiably *proud. Representative . football honour? are not new to the~ Jacob family as -"Ran's" father, Mr. Harry Jacob who is a well-known figure in this • district. was probabiy the best footballer ever to take the field in Horo- - whenua. He played for the New Zealand All Blacks against Australia in 1920. At the age of 17 Harry Jacob was seiected from the Koputaroa junior team to represent the Maori All Blacks in Aus-L-alia. In 1919 lie renresented the North Island and in 1920 played for the New Zealand All Blacks. In 1927 he captained the Manawatu team which won the Ranfurly Shield. "Ran" was born in th^ ald liomestead at Hokio in that yeax and from the shield, ob.iect of so manv hard Rugby tussles, he was named.
