AUCKLAND, July 4. Some Jigures illustrating the prevaIeiico in Auckland city and district of burglary by young men, wero quoted by Ihe JHon. Mr. Jusfice Callan in the courso of sentencing prisonera. He said that vvithin the past six weeks both he and Mr. Justico Finlay had felt compelled to men-.ion this matter but he thought a preeise statement should be raade instead of vague generalities. "The figures have been lookod into and I think should be stated publicly, ' ' he said. "During the half year expiring June 30, the Supreme Court had to scntence 161 offenders and no fewer than 76 of these were cases. in whieh broaking and entering was the crime or onc of the crimes. These have been classified into, age groups and 56 of the 76 offenders wero not yet 25 years of agc. That is, three-quarters of the burglars were under 25 .years of age. "While this imhealthy conditiou remaius, " his Honour added, "it is the plain duty of the Court to make itself difiicult to ' burglars even though young and lirst ofEenders."
