ALL CAPITAL SHIPS STILL AFLOAT
BIKINI, July 1. Vice-Admiral Blandy said indicationsf were that the homh was slightly less
efficient than the one used at Nagasaki but it would take a few days to determine definitely. The Associated Press correspondent ahoard the Appalachian says: "Larger ships hegan to re-enter the lagoon about five hours after the homh hurst. None of these would have entered if the advance parties' instruments had shown dangerous radio aetivity. By midafternoon vessels carrying monitor teams and salvagemen were in the lagoon and tests of the target vessels for radio aetivity begun. Firefighting craft also ventured in. As the observers' ships approached we could see from about three miles a series of violent explosions shake the carrier Independence, flames mounting anew from her. hull. Fire simultaneously again hurst forth aboard the transport Butte. ' ' It was announeed that all the capital ships in the target area were still afloat but fires were observed from a wide variety of points wlthin the lagoon. One of the ships identifled from the air as burning was the eruiser Salt Lake City.
